Irish dance has become increasingly popular in the last couple of decades, and that is in large part due to Riverdance, which has its origins in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest.
When it first began in February of 1995, Riverdance starred Irish dance champions Michael Flatley and Jean Butler.
Since then, more than 25 million people in cities all around the world have been to see Riverdance, and many local communities have been inspired to open their own Irish dance schools and studios.
Irish step-dancing has become a regular part of St. Patrick’s Day parades, school dance recitals and Irish heritage events, and it has also turned up in such movies as “Road to Perdition.”
Along with people who have seen Riverdance live, there are many others who have been able to watch it on video.
Because of this, people are still thrilling to the inventive athleticism of Flatley even though he only remained a part of Riverdance for a few months.
He ended up leaving the show because of creative differences with the producers, but his name is inextricably linked with the Celtic phenomenon.
Thanks to Flatley, countless people have been introduced to the joy and wonder of Irish dance.
