mold in juice box

Parents always want to make sure their kids are eating the best food and drinking the best drinks that they can.

Unfortunately, many of us assume that most brand name food items are safe to hand off without checking through them, when this is far from the case.

Cameron Hardwick, a father who hails from Columbus, Indiana, learned this lesson the hard way.

On the 24th of September, he posted a video showing just how he discovered something absolutely horrifying about some harmless, kid-favorite drinks.

Hardwick had grabbed some juice boxes from Capri Sun for his three-year-old daughter when he noticed one was noticeably less full than the second.

He shows the video that there aren’t any holes on the packaging, then pours its contents out into a transparent glass.

What falls out, alongside the juice, is a sort of mold that slips into the glass.

To think this was going to be an after-dinner treat for his daughter is enough to make any father shudder.

In the video, Hardwick states very clearly that this is an unacceptable issue.

He posted the video hoping to bring awareness to other parents, grandparents, and guardians to children so they could make doubly sure to avoid falling victim to this.

Hardwick’s video gained a lot of attention on social media. It gained over 84,000 shares and 8,400 comments.

Many of these comments are from parents who love the brand of juice and drink it very often, and lots of people agreed how gross it was and that they hoped the issue would be fixed so no one would be harmed from consuming a drink like that.

For some, it was their second time hearing about such a problem.

Some added that it was possible that the companies manufacturing the products had failed to seal it properly, thus allowing air to enter the packaging and make the juice susceptible to mold.

It wasn’t long before the Capri Sun company caught wind of what was going on and circulating throughout social media.

Lynne Galia, the spokeswoman for the company, said that their quality team performed a test on the affected juice box and revealed that a small puncture had caused the mold to grow.

She explained that, although it was certainly not pleasant to look at, the mold occurred naturally on its own in the same way that an apple left out for too long would begin to grow mold.

She also stated that beginning 2014, new packaging was used for all Capri Sun boxes that were clear, allowing parents to peek into the juice boxes to ensure they were fully fresh.

On top of that, she recommended that guardians gently squeeze these juice pouches to be sure that there are no leaks, and to discard any that have holes.

The Capri Sun website also readily acknowledged that they were aware of the mold problem.

They explain that, should a puncture occur in any box of juice free from preservatives, mold was likely to grow, though it was quite a rare situation.

They provided similar advice to what their spokesperson provided, saying parents could check through the clear bottoms and squeeze the pouches.

Hopefully, now that parents are more aware, they will be able to check their children’s juice boxes to prevent any mishaps!
