mosquito bites skeeter syndrome

Mosquito bites are annoying and uncomfortable, but at least in most cases, they’re nothing but an itchy and irritating inconvenience and don’t affect most of your life.

But for some people, getting a mosquito bite can cause extreme pain and even agony.

Since most don’t think mosquito bites can result in such feelings, many fail to realize that this pain is not normal and fail to seek out treatment.

The fact is that experiencing severe pain from mosquito bites that then cause swelling and scarring is a very common symptom of something called Skeeter Syndrome.

Most mosquito bites resemble small, pink-ish circles that are raised from the skin and are rarely more than half an inch in width.

These bites will usually disappear in a day or two. But those with Skeeter Syndrome have these bites turn very large, reddish, and result in boils and scars.

Why does this happen? This is because the people in question are experiencing an allergic reaction to these mosquito bites.

Mosquito saliva contains a number of different proteins, and they cause little breakouts in most people and severe, intense physical reactions in those with Skeeter Syndrome.

People with this allergy may also face nausea, swelling, and fevers.

Although it can be alarming when an entire arm turns red and becomes swollen due to a single mosquito bite, the lucky news is that this isn’t usually life-threatening.

Bee and wasp stings that cause allergic reactions can be fatal, but mosquito bites are far from the same and only generate mild responses.

Still, that doesn’t mean the symptoms aren’t very painful.

In addition, some patients with Skeeter Syndrome can develop very painful blisters on the skin, experience difficulty breathing, feel uncontrollably nauseous, or even have their eyes swell shut.

Even worse, some larger bites have a tendency to become infected, and this is where the danger comes in.

This is why those with this allergy need to make sure that they are taking all necessary precautions around the times mosquitoes are out and about.

Long clothing that covers most of the skin and ample bug spray can be helpful in this situation.

Those who have been bitten can purchase Benadryl or other common allergy medicines over the counter.

Hydrocortisone cream can also aid in relieving the reaction, and in a pinch, an ice pack will do the trick.

For those who want to, it is possible to get allergy injections that prevent most of the symptoms from bites for prolonged periods of time.

Mosquitoes track their potential prey by following the smell of chemicals in sweat and carbon dioxide in breath.

If you’re a magnet for these bugs, here are some of the things mosquitoes tend to like: they tend to prefer men over women – though they are more attracted to pregnant women – those who have type O blood, and individuals who are overweight.

They are also more likely to bite those who are sweaty, have just drunk beer, or naturally happen to produce more levels of ammonia, uric acid, or lactic acid.
