‘Humanity Is Doomed’: People Toss Cheese On Babies’ Faces For Social Media Likes

The latest internet trend involves throwing American cheese at the face of a baby and snapping a photo to post under the hashtag #cheesed.

Internet trends frequently make everyone ask the timeless question “Huh?”, and this is no exception.

A search through the #cheesed hashtag reveals videos with hundreds of thousands of views on Twitter and Instagram.

It doesn’t take long for the cheese puns to get cheesy.

Sandy Santana, Children’s Rights executive director, warned parents about the Internet game.

While she said it’s not child abuse exactly, every parent should treat their child with care.

“Throwing cheese at helpless babies can, in some cases, shock them and lead to unnecessary discomfort. Is that really worth a few social media likes?”

One has to wonder if these were the kinds of things she imagined she would be called for opinions on when she took her high-profile job.

Chrissy Teigen, a model and co-host of the television program Lip Sync Battle, shared her opinion as a mom.

“I love a prank as much as anybody,” she tweeted, “but I cannot get myself to throw cheese at my adorable, unsuspecting baby who has all the hope and trust in the world in me.”

These opinions have not stopped the #cheesed masses, however. Lauren Jorgenson, a mom from New York, believes others are taking the fun challenge too seriously.

“It’s not like I threw a bag of flour at his face,” she said. “We all have our different ways of parenting, mine’s just a little cheesy!”

I warned you about the cheese puns.

We’ll have to wait to see what the #cheesed babies have to say a few decades from now when they witness their surprised faces for themselves, but I suspect we will see at least a few videos of surprised #cheesed parents when this trend comes full circle.
